Educational Sample Kits

The Educational Sample Kits division of Nanotech Innovation is developing a variety of samples with micro to nano-scale features for inclusion in an educational sample kit. Such a sample kit would provide six samples from a variety of disciplines that could be imaged with atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopes, and each representing a cutting-edge nanoscale science and technology research area. These samples include:

Taking advantage of state-of-the-art research facilities and research developments on campus, we are developing background information and samples for educational purposes. We are experimenting with different fabrication techniques based on the sample, optimizing imaging techniques for each sample, and writing background information and sample student laboratories in order to fully bring out the exciting science and technology represented by each sample. It is our hope that the samples will give students an interesting variety of materials representing micro to nano-scale science and technologies from several different disciplines. For each sample we plan to supply the following:

  1. Physical sample, mounted and ready for imaging
  2. Description of the sample fabrication
  3. Short sample description and quick imaging guide
  4. Prototype laboratory for student use
  5. CD with an animation

Once completed, the goal is to market our sample kits to Nanoscience Instruments in Phoenix, AZ. Their motto is that “Nanoscience Instruments provides solutions to scientists, engineers, and educators around the world.  Our products and services serve the fast growing field of nanoscience, with a focus on scanning probe microscopy and nanoscale surface analysis instrumentation.” With the help of students from Nanotech Innovations, Nanoscience Instruments will be able to develop our one-of-a-kind samples and provide them with their scanning probe microscopes to further the educational benefit of the scopes.
